I haven't written anything since we predicted the Blues were going to make the playoffs in December, but last night's nightmare reignited a burning hatred toward NBC that seems to circulate around this time every year. Here's why we STILL hate NHL on NBC.
Before I get into this rant I'd like to explain why I personally dislike watching games on NBCSN. Blues Buzz provides material ESPN and other big sport networks do not; opinions from die-hard fans. Fox Sports has announcers focusing in on these teams so there are very few mistakes made during their broadcasts. NBC, like ESPN, consists of educated journalist and broadcasters. Some of them are watching a team for the first time—AND THEY ARE TRYING TO ANNOUNCE THE GAME. These announcers have their beloved teams as we have the Blues. So expecting them to be able to cover every team in the NHL could be considered unfair. However, it is their job... so like... what gives? No. I will not hear you out. My mind is set here. NHL coverage by NBC is a joke, and it's horrible that Blues fans have to deal with it every year in the playoffs. For those of you who don't know, the Boston/Columbus game went into overtime last night. They played before the Blues and Stars. NBC interrupted the Blues game in the first period, resulting in millions of fans missing-out on Fabbri's first playoff goal in three years. Both the Dallas and St. Louis markets missed several minutes of playoff hockey. — Tony - x (@soIoucity) April 26, 2019
What could be worse than that? Well, not only do they fail to pronounce names correctly... they CONTINUE to misprounounce names after being called out on it for years. Years. I wrote "Why we hate NHL on NBC" in 2015. That article is still relevant today, and it shouldn't be. Even Panger is trying to relay the message.
I could keep going, but the more I write, the more frustrated I get. NBC needs to figure it out.
These announcers are paid to explain what is happening in a game. The names should be practiced and known before broadcasting. It's the NHL Playoffs, so there should be no margin for error. You know what rhymes with "error", kinda? Pierre. Pierre McGuire is the only man I know of capable of turning a bone-crushing hit or an electrifying goal into a two-minute exploration of junior hockey in Saskatoon. His side stories that nobody asks for are distracting and irrelevant to the game. The Darren Pang lookalike patted me on the shoulder one time by the Blues locker room and I still don't understand why. It kinda freaked me out a bit. The dude has a history of getting too close to people (players included). He is credited with amazing quotes such as, "You need to score goals to win hockey games" and "I don't think he's happy his team is losing right now." Thank you for that jaw-dropping analysis. That's why you get paid the big bucks, eh? Here are a couple hilarious vids. Hope you enjoyed this rant. Let's go Blues. If you've made it this far, I salute you.
